The way to Fix a Wobbly Armoire

The way to Fix a Wobbly Armoire

Part of the worldwide appeal of the armoire is that the furniture piece is freestanding. An armoire is like a large, upright closet that may be set in almost anywhere. They are tall and may be top-heavy, especially when they are full. If you have an armoire that wobbles from side to side, then it is likely because one of the feet is missing or damaged a glide. It doesn’t take much to cause the wobble, and it is going to only get worse if not taken care of promptly. Fix it using a few straightforward tools.

Eliminate all of the clothing from the armoire. Put both hands on it and rock it left and right. Identify the cracked or worn foot by trial and error. If it tilts to one side, the broken or worn foot is most likely on that side. Slide the armoire away from the wall a few inches. Tilt it back and forth. If you find that it tilts in one direction, that may pinpoint which foot is bad. If you can not tell yet, that is OK.

Slide the armoire away from the wall and place it on its back. Examine the feet. It is likely that you may be able to identify which one is bad. If you see that some of the feet have metal guides and some don’t, you have found the problem. Use a hammer to tap new 1/4-inch-thick floor glides in the feet that are missing them. If you see just one foot that is obviously chipped or slanted, that is why the armoire is unsteady. Sand the foot off apartment using a hand block using 100-grit sandpaper and shake at a 1/4-inch glide onto it.

Stand with the armoire on its feet. Rock it back and forth both ways, just as you did previously. If it still rocks, it is because the glide, or even among the glides you replaced, wasn’t thick enough. Lay the armoire back on its back again.

Pry the offending glide out using a screwdriver and diagonal pliers. Concentrate on one at a time. Hammer a 3/8-inch glide in the foot. Stand with the armoire back up. Rock it with your hands as you did previously.

Repeat the process of replacing other 1/4-inch glides with 3/8-inch glides one by one if it still wobbles slightly. If it still wobbles with 3/8-inch glides — which is unlikely — replace these glides with 1/2-inch glides one at a time.
