Decorate With Intention: A Nook of One's Own

Virginia Woolf announced, “A woman must have money and a room of her own when she is to write fiction.” Whether you are a budding author, designer, artist, or simply needing a calm refuge, you deserve a creative area reserved just for you.

Having a special place all to yourself may look to be a luxury, but it does not need to be big or fancy to fit the bill. The purpose is to create an atmosphere which nurtures your passions — somewhere you may slide away to, even if only for an hour, which leaves you feeling refreshed and renewed.

A complete room is fantastic, and if you have the region, by all means go for it! If not, don’t worry. There are many creative ways to carve out nooks in your house. In fact, the solution may be hiding right before your eyes. Join us this week as we explore tips for designing your dream room with everything you have got.

The very first step is to have a moment to ponder what you want to have more time and space to get on your lifetime. Pour yourself a fresh cup of coffee or tea and let yourself daydream about this. Do you want to sit down in quiet and peace and finally dig into this stack of novels on your bedside table? Have you been itching to pick up a paintbrush? Pining for a comfortable place to catch up with your very best friend? Whatever comes to mind, be cautious. This is your space, so make sure it serves your purpose.

If art is in your fire list, you may not have to look any further than your own kitchen for a perfect place to create. Kitchens usually come equipped with of the studio principles: easy-to-clean surfaces, a sink at the ready and plenty of storage area.

Try placing an easel or a little drafting table near a window that gets good light, and store supplies in a cupboard nearby. Still worried about spills? Keep a few standard drop materials handy (available at most hardware stores) and throw down one before opening up those paints.

In case you have a window with a lovely view, it might soon be your favorite place with the accession of a built-in window chair. If you are looking for somewhere to read and interrogate, this is best.

There is not any need to limit your thinking to stains inside the house. In case you have a porch, then you can transform one side into your private oasis. An Adirondack chair with a footrest and cushy pillow tucked in among lush greenery could make a lovely place to write in a journal or simply relax in peace with a tall iced green tea.

The backyard offers even more possibilities. A dining table place under the shade of a tree or arbor could make an inspiring place to work. Consider including a mirror or small water feature as a romantic finishing touch.

If relaxation is what you need, go to get a cushy lounge area on the back porch or terrace, complete with fluffy cushions and a tray for tea and snacks. Outdoor curtains which can be drawn closed for solitude would be perfect for midafternoon naps.

You can create a minilounge indoors too, by converting a nook or a cupboard into a getaway. White and warm coastal beige paired with rustic wood could make a soothing palette.

Have a long or L-shaped living room? This configuration is notoriously hard to decorate as a single area. Rather than fight it, use it for your advantage and carve out a private nook. Leave the larger section of the room to be used by all, and claim the smaller end for yourself.

Fill your corner with items which make you happy and provide comfort. Candles, lovely textiles, artwork, fresh blossoms in the backyard, a stack of inspiring books and somewhere to put your beverage will set the stage for relaxation and dreaming.

If you do your very best thinking while, well, literally looking in to space, a coffee-bar-style perch placed at the window may be just the ticket. Tall bar stools with high backs and bars to rest your feet on provide relaxation for a longer stretch of time, while a built-in table gets the most of your room.

If your home’s interior is cramped but you are blessed with a large outside area, the solution might be an outdoor room or a converted garden shed. With French doors and a brick entry, you may never want to leave.

Other areas to look for extra space comprise a finished basement, an attic, as well as the garage. Warm up the area with soft lighting, an area rug and colorful art, and before long you’ll forget your creative office is connected to your home at all.
